Steps to reproduce

It’s been years since you launched and this thing still hangs constantly. Seriously, does anyone in Microsoft actually use this thing? How can you possibly not be running into the serious crippling HANGING issues I do EVERY SINGLE TIME I use it? It’s unusable. So annoying! AAAAAAH!

    • First thanks for hanging in there and actually taking the time to give any feedback at all.  You could have just walked away, that would have been easier.  So thank you.

Second, hang scenarios have been a big focus for me and my team and so I hope to give you some relief soon.  We’ve been going after things that are not especially site-specific but just general patterns that might lead to non-responsiveness.

In order to help more you can give me some example pages that you look at that are particularly troublesome. If you’re looking at the same stuff I’m already looking at, great. If not then maybe the extra diversity will help.

For now I’m going to resolve the bug “not repro” this isn’t because I never see hangs.  I do.  But without specifics I can’t do anything about this particular bug.

I will leave the bug open for several more days to save you the steps of reactivating it.  If  I don’t hear from you, i’ll go ahead and resolve it then.

As they say in Hunger Games – Thank you for your candor.

Oh one more thing: extensions can contribute to hanging and non-hanging in weird ways.  You might try removing all extensions and/or keeping just an ad blocker.  If you notice a pattern that would be helpful.  If you can tell me what (if any) extensions you use that might be helpful.  Sometimes ad blockers help responsiveness a lot.  Other times they make the problems worse.

    • Rico,

Thank you for graciously responding to my frustrated note. In my experience, it’s just about any site I visit. Hangs (as in can’t interact with the page for several seconds at a time… it doesn’t always show the little “not responding” note… even though it’s clearly not responding) especially when loading or unloading a page.

For specifics, all of these sites hang Edge every time I visit (either when loading the page, when scrolling before things aren’t finished loading, and/or when unloading a page to navigate to a new page):

      cnn.com
      next.reality.news
      roadtovr.com
      windowscentral.com
      forbes.com
      wonderhowto.com
      engadget.com
      theverge.com
      chartbeat.com/demo/
      gizmodo.com

This is with no plugins. Safari on my iPhone is faster & more responsive than Edge on my i7 Surface Book.

And, to be clear, I WILL NOT use an ad blocker. I WANT the websites I frequent to make money from their work (I also don’t steal music, food, wifi, or anything else I consume… Same as MOST people, so suggesting an ad blocker as a solution may explain why this problem isn’t bugging the shit out of your team like it is me?).

That said, I’m 90% sure it’s the ads that slow things down on most these sites as things become responsive again after all ads finally finish loading/initializing. Seems like Edge is really really slow at many of the things modern ad platforms all have to do (DOM manipulation, creating multiple nested iframes, load and unload events with synchronous XHR calls home and/or beacons for all of said iframes, DOM change detection, visibility detection tied to scroll events, calls to getBoundingClientRect() hooked into scroll events or getAnimationFrame(), etc).

I don’t want to give up on Edge. There’s a lot it’s amazing at. And as a dev, I know quite a lot of people use it to browse my sites… that’s why the performance (and a handful of other bugs) frustrates me so much. I’m being harsh because I care.

    • STILL SWEARING AT BUILD 15002!

    • The UX improvement’s are great. It’s the basics (not hanging… responding to mouse clicks / scrolling / mouse-overs immediately, closing immediately, etc) that Edge sucks at.

    • Ok. I really gotta give it to you. Build 15007 is SIGNIFICANTLY better. Still a freezes here and there, but nothing like the long hangs from a couple builds back. Keep up the good work!

    • Just wanted to chime in to say you’ve made MASSIVE improvements in recent builds. 15031 is totally usable! Yay!
