Steps to reproduce

In IE11 and Edge, a textarea that is display: none (or within such an element) can still receive keypresses even though it’s not visible:

  • See https://jsbin.com/xodajiv/212/edit?html,css,js,output
  • Focus into the textarea
  • Click another tab in the same browser window
  • Click back to the JSBin
  • The textarea should now be hidden
  • Without clicking anywhere, type some text
  • Click the Show button
  • The textarea has the text you typed, even though you couldn’t see the text as you were typing

I tried adding a readonly property in the focusout handler; no change. It was readonly when shown, but still got the text (see this bin).

This is presenting a potential safety issue, in that a user could potentially enter text where they are not aware they are entering it.
