Steps to reproduce

With our AngularJS 1.5.8 app, the latest version of Edge (part of the Creators Update) will not ask the user for basic authentication credentials required for an XHR. The 401 status returned by the web service is simply treated as an error.

If the user makes the web service request manually, the authentication dialog is displayed and future XHRs to the web service work.

Attached is login information for seeing this problem occur in a simplified scenario. The source for this simplified app is also provided (msedgetest.zip). You cannot actually run the app because it relies on the web service running on the same server. (You could presumably replace the web service call with any requiring basic authentication, however.)

Also provided is a screenshot of the success case. Chrome was used, but the same result occurs in Firefox, IE 11, and the Edge version prior to the Creators Update.

Lastly, a screenshot of the failure in Edge 15.15063, with the console showing the 401 error, is provided.
