Steps to reproduce

I had 2 pdf files open in Edge when my computer decided to restart. I wasn’t at the computer at the time so I don’t know if it restarted due to a crash or something else. After the restart the 2 files I had open will open but will be entirely black in Edge. They open fine in other programs and every other pdf file I have opens fine in Edge. These are pdf files that I have saved onto my computer directly, not ones I’m trying to view online if that matters.

Interestingly, as far as I can tell everything is still there. I can search and copy just fine, and the formatting seems fine (neat paragraphs with empty areas where images were).

  • I’ve opened a pdf file in microsoft edge, showing black boxes instead of the images/figures of organic chemistry reactions, opens fine in google chrome tho.

  • I have added 4 screenshots and one of the files I am having issues with. The first 3 screenshots are all from page 6 of the provided pdf, showing it in both edge and adobe reader. The 4th screenshot is to show that I can open other pdf files without issue.

  • 'Same problem here. Not all PDF’s, just some. 'Makes no sense. Only after the “Creator” update.
    Resetting default app doesn’t stick. I can reset the default, or “open with…” and "always use…", and as soon as I close AcrobatDC, Windows changes the default back to Edge.

  • I am having the same issue, it seems like the color grey is being rendered as completely black, i can also confirm that this started to happen after I updated to the Windows Creators update. It did not happen prior.

  • same thing. before it worked just fine and since the last windows update package it’s black, but only for those pdf files that the text can be highlighted and copied (not the google copy which the text cannot be copied, there edge opens the pdf file like before).

  • We have similar problems. Windows 10 1511 (10586.962).
    After last week’s updates, many pdfs show as black.
    Updates installed between working/not working:

  • Encountered that issue out of the blue as well.

    I tried creating simple pdf files (multiple jpgs -> one multipage pdf file) with Finereader 10 (not sure about the version) and with ImageMagick. PDFs generated by IM work just fine while Finereader’s ones show black screen.

  • We are getting this reported from our customers a lot. Some PDF:s are fine and some are completely black. Sometimes it helps to reload the browser.

  • The same is happening to me and I need a fix, this is impacting my work. Black boxes appearing in PDF’s where pics are. Not all PDFs…random. I am unable to completely read docs that clients are sending me.

  • Same issue here, affecting lots of customer using Edge to open our PDF invoices / statements…We’d need a fix for this sooner rather than later. As a work around I’m asking my customers to click … then “Open with Internet Explorer”

  • I’m encountering this issue as well. It seems to happen somewhat more often with PDF’s composed of scans of old books (no idea why). For example:

    Also, the issue has only cropped up for me recently. In times past, I’ve never had any issue with Edge rendering PDF’s correctly.

  • this bug was introduced in a recent Windows 10 update rollup. it affects all my PCs running windows 10, and extends to applications which share a rendering engine with MS Edge (for instance, the MS Reader app). please fix!

  • it occurs when a bitmapped background is present on a page. instead of displaying the bitmap correctly, it is displayed as a solid black box.

  • Exactly the same problem. Thought I was losing my mind, as certain files that used to open fine appear only black now. Ever since I installed Windows Creator update.

  • Has anyone received a resolution to this issue? I receive docs from clients daily and this is a serious problem in my work environment. Looks like I will be purchasing alternative PDF software.

  • the issue has been assigned and is in code review, which means a fix will hopefully be forthcoming in a future update.

  • Same issue for me. I scan receipts and documents using a Cannon printer/scanner. The items I scanned on or before 6/20/17 still open fine using Edge or Reader. But, scans on/after 6/26/17 are all black using Edge or Reader. Though they open fine using other software. It is good to know it is not an issue with me or my system. I know MS will get this corrected. Thanks.

  • When it says "Fixed", does that mean a patch has been sent or that it will be sent soon? Because, if it is supposed to be fixed on my computer, then it didn’t work as I am scanning now and it is as black as ever.

  • I just downloaded a pdf document and part of it shows up with black pages and other pages I can see. I can open previously downloaded documents just fine. When I open the document in Chrome, I can see all just fine. Even when I open the document in Chrome and then save it as a pdf , it still opens with the black pages. Please update asap. as these are important documents. Thank You

  • I am having a similar problem. I can open pdf’s if I select a different program, but whenever I try to open a pdf by the default setting (to the edge), the pages are entirely blacked out. If you can’t fix the coding, please tell me how to change the default used to view/open all pdfs

  • the issue is marked ‘fixed’ so I would expect the next weekly patch day (Wednesdays, I believe) the fix should go live.

    in the meantime, you can choose a different PDF reader by right clicking on a PDF file, selecting 'open with’, and choosing a different app. you are also given the option to make the new app the default.

  • This is good news indeed (same problem over here, really annoying since I like the .pdf reader very much for quick views).

  • If I view a PDF file in Edge some of the pictures show black. If I open in Chrome or Internet Explorer I can view the PDF correctly. 
    Every thing was ok until recently. I can’t tell my members only to use Chrome or IE. Any ideas?

  • PDFs displayed just fine until an update ran on my PC. Is there any eta on when this will be resolved it is a real pain in the backside.

  • I have W10 Ver 1703 OS 15063.447 If I view a PDF file in Edge the pictures show black. If I open in Foxit or Internet Explorer I can view the PDF correctly.

  • Why is this issue marked as "fixed". Nothing has changed. I continue to be unable to view pictures in any PDF document.

  • Stop telling me it’s “Fixed” until it IS. This is really pi$$ing me off. And why won’t changing the default PDF reader to Adobe DC Pro stick?

  • Todays updates seems to have fixed the problem on 1511 (KB4025344).

  • THANK YOU!!! When you have advertisers who have paid to be in your newsletter then all they see is black squares then they want their money back. Todays fix worked.
