Steps to reproduce

Repro Steps:

I open many IE sessions from a shortcut (until 1 GB GPU is 1/3 to 1/2 used up). Sessions all working OK at this stage.
I leave PC locked overnight (not sleep), unlock, then open a new IE session from the same shortcut, target: “C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe”
At this point the symptoms may be evident …
Symtoms: The new IE session opens ‘invisible’ but on top.
I can see previous session (or any other application that was on top before clicking shortcut) but cannot click on it. Task bar has new process but I cannot see the IE session when I click. Task bar buttons flood in around the ‘start’ button, corrupting the taskbar (windows explorer).

I close IE 11 (using task manager or process explorer) and the corruption in the task bar goes away.

I can reduce the chance of it happening if I change to software rendering (instead of hardware rendering) but it can happen eventually anyway. I have Chrome open now, with many more windows/tabs, but never had the problem, until I try using IE 11.

Previous versions IE 8 and IE 9 (not tried IE 10) had no such issues (even with many more windows/tabs open). Running Windows 7 SP1 64-bit with all current updates. Problem happened on own and colleague’s PC at work, and on my PC at home with completely different (though reasonably contemporary) hardware (new at work and 2 years old at home).

May (or may not) be similar to “Internet Explorer 11 final - frozen tabs” by dnbianco

Example hardware I have had the exact same problem:
AMD FirePro 4900 (1 GB professional GPU) on Intel Xeon platform;
Radeon HD 6790 (1 GB consumer/gaming card) on AMD FX platform.

Add-ins: Adobe Acrobat Create PDF Toolbar / Helper / from Selection 11.0.09 (32 and 64 bit); Citrix CtxIEInterceptorBHO Class; Microsoft Office Document Cachen Handler; Send to OneNote; OneeNote Linked Notes; Java™ Plug-In (and PlugIn 2) SSV Helper 32 bit only; Trend Micro TmIEPlugInBHO Class.

Expected Results:

IE to open new, normal window on top, showing home page (search engine I commonly use).

Actual Results:

    • By using Chrome for most of my browsing I avoid the issue, but it happened again today when I had several IE windows open (only a few, not a fraction of the number I use in Chrome). Today with IE I opened a new IE window (with 2 others already open) and got the taskbar corruption. I still need IE for some sites/applications.

There are no comments on this record about why “won’t fix” (even after “Confirmed” - this sort of corruption demonstrates a system vulnerability.

      All our patching is up-to-date.
