Steps to reproduce

I stumbled unto this thread while searching for an answer that appears to be this same problem. Webpages are opening twice per request. I am not a programmer so I will not be able to communicate this in a applicable way. This started happening right after the major update September 2017. It causes errors and web pages to stop responding. It appears to be more repeatable when pages include flash video, but not exclusively.

    • Sorry for the confusing first sentence, I copied pasted from a prior thread I found, but the comment did not complete. There was a thread started about this problem dated 2016. This issue seemed to be exactly what was happening currently. Facebook is very much affected by this issue. That page continuously stops responding. Other pages will not load completely or stop loading half way. I have not had any problems with edge since the original release except for spell check issues way back at the start.

    • Hi Demma,

Can you give more information on what you mean by the same page is loading twice?  You see two tabs opening?  or you see that the page starts loading and then appears to reload after sometime?

Also, will you provide the previous discussion link, so I can compare and/or combine the issues?

      Appreciate the help,

      Steve

    • ok, so ‘most’ pages will load and then load again. IOW it is almost like a ‘refresh’ of the same page. I have deletion of temp data at shut down enabled, I thought maybe this is what is causing this. I have not yet tested that theory yet. I don’t think its the culprit since its the current session that reproduces the problem. I never had this problem until the update in early September late august this year. Sometimes its a full 2 seconds before it refreshes. like a login page, where I am starting to type user / password info and then for no reason the page refreshes. I did think it was a flash video problem, but it has proven not to be the case as even the simplest of pages are doing this. Sorry for the delay, for some reason MS emails started going to junk mail folder.??? here is the link, the only difference is that I don’t get an error.

    • Hi Demma,

Are you still experiencing this issue?  Did you have to create a new user to resolve the issue?

If you are still having the issue, a fiddler4 or a har file from the deubgger’s network window (F12) would be helpful.

      Changed Status to “Not reproducible”

    • I have the same exact problem… It started happening to me yesterday. I dont know why… This doesnt happen in Mozzila Firefox, just in MS Edge…
So can someone from edge team help me?

    • I am not sure why I am not getting notifications from my MS account about updates from this site/thread. It seems that "mail app’ is causing more junk to filter through, that I have blocked from within outlook. Anyway… the problem with refreshing pages has not been rectified completely. Whenever I open a site that requires/has a login screen, the page does a complete refresh. Other pages have seemed to have stopped this activity since the April 18th update. But since this has been going on for some time, I may have just gotten used to it, and no longer notice the symptom. I will have to pay attention. This problem was continued and I think is still open in the other thread noted in my first or second post. I believe that is where this is being investigated, as it appears they have marked this ‘un-reproducible’ because, as I stated I did not receive the notification that somebody responded.

    • sorry for the double post… something went wrong with submission…

    • How i fixed this was, that i went to settings, then apps, then i searched for ms edge, the choose advanced options… scroll down, and there you have 2 options - first is fix, i clicked on the button, and the problem was still there. and second is (i dont know the correct word in english), but direct transation would be "readjust"… I clicked on the button, and problem with loading pages twice was solved…

    • So you ‘reset’ and it was fixed… I will try this… If I remember correctly I re-installed Edge completely awhile back when I first had this problem. Not sure if the ‘reset’ procedure does anything different. We will see. I think reset could possibly remove all your favorites so better to back up (export to file) your bookmarks and favorites.

    • Hi Demma,

I apologize.  I believe I misread the responses.  I thought someone else explaining how it was corrected was you.

Overall, I am not aware of an issue like this in the current windows 10 release 17134.48 or even 16299.  I believe you said you were using 15063.  Is that still the version you are using?  Will you provide the extended version of Windows 10 you are using?  Win + S and type “winver” and hit enter.

There are a couple things we can do to get this issue resolved.

As in the other thread you mentioned, one of the main solutions was to create a new user account and see if the issue is there.  I usually only do this in order to verify that the OS is working and the issue is due to something in the current user account.  Here is the how to create a new user account link from the post you mentioned:

      https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4026923/windows-10-create-a-local-user-or-administrator-account

I am also curious the procedures you used originally when you said you re-installed Edge.  I have seen a couple in-correct methods mentioned.  Also, depending on your current OS version, we have options to do this properly.  I will say that there is not an program or executable that you can download from the web to re-install Edge.

Let me know so we can get this sorted out.  :)

      Microsoft EdgeHTML 17.17134

      Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17134.48]
      Build 1803

The re-installing of edge was done back in version 15063. At that time I followed an MS forum procedure of deleting the entire edge directory removing a registry entry and rebooting… or something similar, its been a while. Since then I have done a complete reinstall because of another suggestion involving the reset of all my NTFS folder / file permissions that was supposed to fix a large number of DCOM event errors that have plagued Windows 10 since its first release. That went entirely catastrophically and my OS was permanently damaged.

So starting from a format of the hard drive and a clean install using the current media creation tool on April 20th 2018, then the Feature update that quickly followed. this is my current state of windows 10 OS.

I created a MS user account initially at the first boot of this new install. Then created a local account soon after. And then created a guest account to use as a test bed.

Since then I followed the advice given here to ‘reset’ edge. This didn’t seem to have an effect as far as the current state of the refresh / double page loading routine that affects edge. The current symptoms are not as bad as before. I think that the April 18th-30th update fixed 90% of the problem. I still get a double page load whenever I have a login screen to gain access to a website. For instance Amazon. When the bookmark is opened, it is at the login page. When I start to type in my credentials, the page reloads and I have to start over. It happens at email sites also. As far as I can tell it happens at all login pages.

Now I am not someone who is constantly using my system, or searching the web all the time. So, since the April Update I have not been to every login page I have , to be sure this is the case in the current state of my OS. I would have to verify that this is happening at all login pages and also to be sure that the original "every page’ reloading is not still occurring. It happened so often over a long period of time that I just grew used to it and didn’t take notice any longer. I will spend time over this holiday weekend to examine the ‘exact’ state of the problem and will report back on Monday on what I have found to be the updated situation.

      Thanks for your time

    • Hi Demma,

I wanted to verify whether you have tried “repairing” or "Reset"ing Edge in your current install, I.e. from April 2018.  I am providing the instructions below so you do not have to rely on any non Microsoft webpage.

Can you try resetting Edge?  You will most likely lose your favorites and other customizations.  The procedure to do this is outlined below and I have attached screenshots.

Open the system settings.  Win + I

      Click the “Apps” icon

In the “Apps & features” section search for “edge”

      Single click on “Microsoft Edge”

      Select “Advanced options”

      Click the “Repair” button

If the “Repair” option does not correct the issue repeat the procedures above except instead of “Repair” for the last step (#6), click the “Reset” button.

If this does not work, I would like to have you look in the debugger (F12 to open) console for errors and possibly take a trace.  I will provide those instructions if needed after we verify the repair/reset does not work.  Quick reminder now, that if you do provide the trace, do not actually login.  My understanding is that this issue is when you first click to login.  I.e. you haven’t entered your login information yet.  Correct me if I am wrong.

      Steve

    • Will you tell me what sites you are seeing this issue now?  I know you said facebook.com, however, I want to verify that.

    • In April I did a complete reinstall of Windows 10 using the latest creation tool at that date. So in a sense I reset Edge. The problem existed before this reinstall of the OS and persisted after. I will have to now go to the various pages that I observed this behavior and report back which ones are still affected. I know my login page for Amazon and AmazonSmile (an alternative login for Amazon having to do with charity donations) are definitely still affected. I will get back here later today on what others I find.

You are correct in that it is the ‘loading’ of the page not after credentials are typed. Although on the Amazon sites my creds are saved and are auto inserted. so the page loads, my creds appear, and then the page reloads. I need to be sure that these (my user/password) are not included in the trace post, as I have never done that before.

    • I will look at the Amazon Smile login sequence as well.

    • Ok so it appears that none of the pages are exhibiting the behavior any longer. Even the Amazon logins have ceased this behavior. This must have been rectified in the last week or so. There were some updates installed during this time, but I have not checked what these addressed. I went through my bookmarks pretty extensively and did not find the problem manifesting itself on any of my popular visited pages. We may have reached a conclusion of this bug

    • Well that is mostly good news.  I do like to root cause issues when we can.  I am glad it is sorted out as that is not normal behavior.

If it happens again, please let us know.  Appreciate your patience with this and all the extra testing.

I will close this as "fixed".
