Steps to reproduce

Edge doesn’t display text in Epub 3 fixed layout. As a digital publisher most of our clients with Edge can’t read easily our books and that’s a very big issue !
Please fix it quickly or uninstall edge as default reader on Windows !

  • This sounds like a duplicate of my issue: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/platform/issues/12276063/ (Hopefully fixed soon, but you could use this issue to confirm)

The issue reported here can be reproduced by opening the originally attached epub in Edge. The first ‘page spread’ in Edge you get a black page with splots and a plain black page. Open the same epub in an epub3 capable app, such as Google Books, and you will see that there is meant to be a title shown on the black page.

On the second ‘page spread’ in Edge you receive 2 blank white pages, in Google Books you see the table of contents.

  • I took a look. It is the same issue I’ve seen with Edge in Fixed Layout Epubs I have. Edge doesn’t implement reading obfuscated fonts. I don’t know why Microsoft decided to support Epubs but didn’t support this feature.
If you look at the black page with shadowed lettering in the example, and open up the developer console, you’ll see Edge is erroring repeatedly on trying to read the fonts files - this is because they have been obfuscated with the IDPF method. If I use Sigil Epub tool and remove the font obfuscation, save, and then reopen it in Edge, it renders like other views.
