Steps to reproduce

When I open Edge, keeps spinning. Can’t open another tab, can’t do anything. I have to go to tasks manager and kill edge. This started happening after one Windows update the beginning of this month. Restored to a prior restore point and problem was fixed. I had another Windows update on 1/9/2018 and again today (1/10/2018) edge is freezing.

I had to download Chrome to get around this problem.

  • Hello Scott,

I can’t recreate the problem now because it is working correctly (at the moment).

I noticed on your instructions to add a screenshot if possible, when it did happen (both times) it locked the entire machine up. Could not shutdown, get task manager, nothing. Had to power off the machine.

Sorry, but currently it is not doing this. However, if it appears again, I will follow your instructions.

  • In my case I found it was all in the display settings. Custom display was too large.
adjusting that to something reasonable like a 100 % and it worked fine and did not
    hang up.

  • Thanks Hank for the recommendation but my setting for text, apps etc. is at 100%. If that is the correct setting you are talking about.

  • Hello,

Edge is doing it again. I don’t see any updates applied so I have no clue as to what is going on. It just keeps spinning.

I tried to open the feedback hub and login also, however that just keeps spinning also. Not sure what to do now. It says it’s checking on a few things. However, never comes back.

  • every time I use Edge it freezes - not worth the hassle stick with chrome

  • Mine started doing this also. (When I open Edge, keeps spinning. Can’t open another tab, can’t do anything. I have to go to tasks manager and kill edge. ) Do you know how I can fix it?

  • After update on Version 1803 Edge is freezes - nothing is shown (no Website or any PDF-File). There is no dialog possible - only stoping the app by TaskManager works. I have tried several solutions from the Internet that describes how to fix or reset edge-Browser, but nothing made it running again. Any Solution from MS?

  • I have same problem on 1803 built. Edge and Start Menu freezes random time. When I try to kill Edge process, the “Background Tab Pool” child process is remaining. Just system restart the solution. I tried to use “Sysinternals Process Explorer” to analyse the processes, but it freezed too.

  • Same problems with Edge on 1803, it opens but instantly freezes. It starts all empty with the top menu bar but no favorites. Also, the notification about cookies right below the address bar and the links to “top websites” are not shown. Nothing can be accessed, no reaction to any kind of input, can only be closed through task manager. We tried a reset through Settings > Apps > Microsoft Edge > Advanced options. Also, we followed instructions to delete everything under C:\Users%username%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe and then go to Powershell and perform "Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” –Verbose}". We also checked installed updates. All to no avail.
    Are we missing anything?

  • This is major problem since I installed 1803 update and still continues into late July. Microsoft you need to get on top of this problem. Many many users are stopping using Edge and going to Firefox or Chrome. Please please sort out. Thank you

  • I turned off Cortana and it made a huge difference.
