Steps to reproduce

I have a new PC with Windows 10 (updated to build 17063). I cannot open / load the Developer Tools. See the screenshot.
I have already tried with restarts and different websites.

Comments and activity

  • As you can see from the screenshot the developer tools UI is not fully loaded and it is completely unresponsive (only the developer tools UI is unresponsive, the browser is not).

  • I have also tried to reinstall Edge as described here but nothing changes: the tools are broken.

  • Hello,

Thank you for providing this information about the issue. After thorough testing, we are unable to reproduce this problem in Edge 17063.

Please let us know what happens when you click the (1) expand down icon (2) show console icon (3) undock icon. These items are identified in our attached file "public-15458103.png".

    Best Wishes,
    The MS Edge Team

  • Absolutely nothing happens when I click those icons. Then I have also tried with the other icons (like X) and nothing happens…

  • Can I do anything in order to help you reproduce the issue? For example, are there any logs that I can send to you? The (new) PC is an ASUS F541UV-GQ669T. The first time that I have opened the F12 tools I was surfing a website that uses service workers: https://pushpad.xyz

  • Hello,

Thank you for providing more information about the issue. Please try these general troubleshooting steps to ensure you have the best Edge experience: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-performance/windows-10-performance-and-install-integrity/75529fd4-fac7-4653-893a-dd8cd4b4db00

  • It’s a new, clean installation of Windows 10 and I’ve already tried to completely reinstall Windows… but nothing has changed. Please provide more specific support.

  • Are there any updates on this? I have tested on the new build 17074 and the problem is still there. Are there any logs that you can investigate in order to find the cause of this?

  • Hello,

Thank you for always providing new information about the issue. We are still unable to repro this problem in our new builds (e.g. 17063 and 170074). Sometimes browser extensions cause these kind of unexplained problems, so please try disabling all browser extensions and restarting Edge to see if this fixes the problem.

    Best Wishes,
    The MS Edge Team

  • It’s a new Windows installation… so there isn’t any Edge extension installed. I have also checked in the Edge settings -> extensions and the list is empty.

  • I have the same problem, F12 shows only a blank window regardless of the web page

  • I have added a snapshot where Edge fails to show developer tool on this very web page

  • Hello,

  • Works for me now with build 17120.

  • Developer tools not working/loading in:

    Microsoft Edge 42.17134.1.0
    Microsoft EdgeHTML 17.17134

Blank window, same as original post.

  • For me the problem started after the last windows 10 update to1803. Before this update edge was not working at all (the known bug: opens and closes immediately).

    Using windows 10 pro

    Microsoft Edge 42.17134.1.0
    Microsoft EdgeHTML 17.17134

Blank window when opening dev tool (F12), same as original post.

recently installed latest cumulative update (kb4284848) but that did not made any impact.

  • Same as original post. Blank window when opening developer tools.

    Things i tried:
Repair, Reset and reinstall from powershell.

If i create a new user account dev tools work for that user but i haven’t found a way to fix it for my own user account.

    Windows 10 Pro 17134.137

    Microsoft Edge 42.17134.1.0
    Microsoft EdgeHTML 17.17134

  • Add-AppxPackage -register “C:\windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdgeDevToolsClient_8wekyb3d8
    bbwe\AppxManifest.xml” -DisableDevelopmentMode -Confirm:$false

  • More information about the PowerShell command that Mohsen d. added is available at the link above provided by Thomas S on Aug 7. Lots of folks there are all reporting success after running that command. It worked for me immediately - no restart or reboot required.

  • PowerShell command shared by Mohsen d. fixed the issue for me.

  • For me it’s still not working… Tried also Repair, Reset and the PowerShell command. Switching from user account is not an option for me here.

When I press F12 I see a blank space where the dev tools should load for a short period, then this pane closes automatically. When I do this again twice, I get the message "This page is having a problem loading". If I press F12 then, Edge crashes completely.
    Same in InPrivate window.

    Microsoft Edge 42.17134.1.0
    Microsoft EdgeHTML 17.17134

  • Still not working.

    Edge Version: 42.17134.1.0
    Windows version: 10.0.17134 Build 17134

  • I’m seeing the same behavior reported by Robin B. above, with a similar entry in the Application event log:

Faulting application name: MicrosoftEdgeCP.exe, version: 11.0.17134.376, time stamp: 0x5bcc2819

    Faulting package-relative application ID: F12

  • Thanks for pointing that out Conrad L.
That seems like some sort of work-around; the app at
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/microsoft-edge-devtools-preview/9mzbfrmz0mnj allows me to use DevTools for open Edge tabs anyway (the original F12 functionality in Edge is still broken).

  • Same as Marco F above, uninstalling kb4462933 fixed it for me.

Broken behaviour was the same as Robin B. ‎Nov‎ ‎6‎, ‎2018, above, except I didn’t use F12 once the “This page is having a problem loading” page appeared, so I can’t confirm if edge crashes at that point or not.

  • I also had this problem and Mohsen d.'s command fixed it immediately for me.

  • Mohsen’s command fixed it for me as well.

  • I also had this problem and Mohsen d.’s command (with powershell) fixed it immediately for me: Add-AppxPackage -register “C:\windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdgeDevToolsClient_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AppxManifest.xml” -DisableDevelopmentMode -Confirm:$false
