IE 11\EDGE caches images that failed to download

Steps to reproduce


Repro Steps:

  1. Open IE 11.
  2. Clear the browser cache.
  3. Navigate to
  4. Set up Fiddler (, or a similar tool, to autorespond with a HTTP 404 when requesting the imageUrl. You can find the imageUrl in the JS section.
  5. Press the Reload image button.
  6. A broken image is appended to the page.
  7. Disable the autorespond you set up at point 4 so the image url should be working.
  8. Press the Reload image button.

Actual result: A new broken image is appended to the page.

Expected result: The appended image should be shown since the image link is working. It seems that IE have cached the HTTP error for this image url.

Expected Results:

The image should be retreived by the browser.
