Edge on Windows 10 Mobile takes much storage space after long time usage

Steps to reproduce

After upgrading to Windows 10 Mobile Edge wasn’t so huge. Maybe 500Mb at least, maybe less. This behavior started from build 10586.318. Now it is 1.25Gb and my phone is on low storage doesn’t let me to update to 10586.420 build.

    • I also have this problem with recent Mobile (fast insider) builds. It grows 1.8GB and only hard reset helps. Tried to clean the cache, nothing helped.

    • By design? What? You save streaming/youtube videos to the limited phone memory and say it is by design? Then it should be the most awful browser design on this feature.

    • That was 5 months ago that the status/reply “by design” was given.

      Nikita, are you stuck still or did you ever work around the issue? The original issue - Edge taking up over 1GB of phone memory seems to be resolved on Builds since then. To get around it, I made sure I did a full Backup, then Hard Reset, did not restore Backup, then changed to Insider Fast, checked for Updates, and installed the available Updates. Then I Reset again, and allowed it to restore from Backup.

      Edge still climbs in size but only to a few hundred MBs… but now there’s more options in Edge’s Settings to wipe the data. Also, in Storage->This Device->Apps & games->Microsoft Edge->Advanced Options, it now breaks down how much of the Edge ‘Total usage’ size is App and how much is Data. There is a ‘Reset’ button but it’s greyed out on my phone, like it is with all the Microsoft Apps for some reason.

      The other day, I was unable to update to a new Build, due to lack of space (still doesn’t tell us how much space we need to have free for the install — annoying!). After moving everything that I could to SD Card, still couldn’t install. I found Edge was at >200MB so having already cleared 'cached data’, I went back into Edge’s ‘clear browsing data’ screen and ticked the first 3 options that contained the word 'data’. That did the trick! Update installed, and after a few days Edge is at 98.5MB total.

    • Daniel B., I’m on production only. I need my phone to work properly when I need it so I don’t want to install Insider Builds with bugs. Thank you for letting me know that this bug was fixed on Insider Builds. I hope Creators Update coming very very soon.

    • My daughter’s Lumia 640 has same issue. Under Microsoft Edge, data is 1.5GB. Tried to clear all browsing data under “settings” of Microsoft Edge, no help! OS build :10.0.15051.0

    • Why is thos issue written as fixed microsoft edge still takes 1.75 gb of my space and i have also updated to the latest version of win 10 built verion 10.0.14393.953

    • I am realy loosing patience with WP… I have lumia 640xl. I moved to wp10 after release… Than i went back, because of so many bigs and performance problems… Now i have wp10 again, becase of lack of support of app for 8.1…

      Now again issue with edge… I am not able to clear data. Outlook as well. Now the phon will run out of memory… I see that issue is fixed, but tjen how is possible that i have same issue? And i think i am not the only one…
      I am using phone for work, i dont have time and i dont want do experient with hard resets… (i did several times)
      What will be the solution from Microsoft?

      Maybe solution is send it against the wall and leave WP

    • This is a big issue…I can’t believe you marked this as fixed. I can’t even use WhatsApp because it tells me it needs at least 100 MB to work, space being held up by Edge (1.30 GB). I either have to go a few days without using my phone or delete apps I really need if I just have to use it or install updates. I tolerate a lot from Windows 10 Mobile but I can’t tolerate not using my phone…otherwise why do I even HAVE a phone in the first place? Please fix this.

    • You guys are talking about 1GB for Edge. You should know, mine is at 12 GB right now! It’s too much I’m moving to Nokia 6 Android and Ditching my Nokia lumia 1520 next week! What a pain.

    • 640 xl is full. 7.28gb…cannot delete or move any apps…

    • There is still no fix for this. No wonder your OS didn’t have any market share even after the large number of affordable phone variants available. Lazy devs, lack of updates and actual fixes. The only sad thing is i cant afford a different phone or else i would’ve switched ages ago. Thanks Microsoft
