Steps to reproduce

Pre Requisite:

  • Settings, ease of access, Narrator, Narrator (ON), Narrator quick launch(ON).
  • Or you can press “Windows+Enter”

Repro Steps:

  1. Open www.gmail.com site
  2. Sign in with valid credentials
  3. Observe that the focus should be on entire page
  4. Invoke the ‘Read Next Item’ command in ‘Item’ mode and navigate by using “Caps + Right” arrow
  5. Navigate till the “Search box” and observe

Expected Result:

  • Narrator should set focus on all the visible UI controls and read the description with out any ambiguity
  • There should not be any nested UI controls.

Actual Result:

  • There are many Nested UI controls present on “Search box”
  • For the first nested UI control narrator reads as “Search search landmark”
  • For the second nested UI control narrator  focus is missing and reads as “Search editable”
  • For the third, fourth nested UI control narrator reads as “Group”
  • For the fourth and sixth nested UI control Narrator reads nothing.
  • For the fifth  and nested UI control Narrator reads as "Column one row one item non selected
  • For the all nested Ui controls if we press “Caps + Enter” narrator reads as “Text not editable”
  • If we keep on navigate using “Caps + Right” arrow the page reloads.

User impact:

User cannot enter text because the focus is never set on “Search field” and Cannot activate the Search field by using “caps + enter” key.

Note:

This is a blocker by using tab too, by using tab focus is in consistent and when it enters to search field the page reloads.

    • This is by design. Edge exposes the exact same tree as Chrome but Chrome Vox does not stop on group items that do not have a name. Edge is building the tree per spec and not able to repro the issue where you couldn’t type into the search box which is the most impactful end user issue.

Gmail can fix the issue by adding role="presentation" to any of the tables that are being used for layout.
