Steps to reproduce

  1. Use Edge
  2. Load devtools
  3. Start profiling
  4. Wait
  5. Stop profiling
  6. Look at the profile results

Edge continually repaints the page, even when nothing is happening.

The devtools provide no useful information whatsoever about what is triggering the paints.

  • I tracked down what was causing this and raised it in issue #8531780.

  • So the related bug is 8531780 which is about pseudo-elements with animated GIF backgrounds continuing to cause repaints even after being removed. Whereas this bug is strictly about the fact that the paints are hard to diagnose in F12.

However, I tested all three of Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, and if you open a regular GIF and then run Performance/Timeline in either one of them, none of them tell you that the GIF is being repainted. There is maybe an opportunity to add a new F12 feature here, but that would be a separate issue. Closing this one.
