Edge Browser Error - We couldn't reach this printer

Steps to reproduce

I’m running Windows 10 Enterprise (version 1607 build 14393.321) and any time that I go to print from MS Edge I receive the “We couldn’t reach this printer. Make sure the printer is on and you are connect to the printer’s network or try a different printer.”

I am able to print just fine from any other application including IE just not Edge. It doesn’t matter if I select my network printer, Microsoft Print to PDF, XPS printer or any other option. Edge receives the error. I have removed my network printer and drivers and tried it with no success.

I have ran DCIM but it says nothing needs to be done.

I have ran SFC /scannow and it says it finds errors and repairs it but I don’t think that it did what it says. I have ran it multiple times and get the same output. I’m up to date on all current updates according to the system.

I have seen this issue dating back to 2015 on many forums including MS community sites and there is no resolution.

  • I dad to save the document and then print from another application. Edge won’t even connect to the “print to XPS” printer.

  • Like the original post states this issue has been around since 2015 and is still being ignored.

  • I can not print from Microsoft edge but I can print from every other program. Microsoft edge says “We couldn’t reach this printer. Make sure the printer is on and you are connected to the printers network or try a different printer” It is on and connected since I can print from other programs! And I have tried a different printer with same results.

  • I can’t print anything from Edge. I just get a message that "We cannot reach this printer", although it is in the printer list and flagged as default. I can print to a pdf then open the pdf in another program and print it. This is very annoying. This is a home computer running Windows 10 and a wireless HP printer. Apparently this is not a new problem. Is there a fix yet?

  • I also cannot print from Edge with exactly the same error even though I can print fine everywhere else.

  • Can someone please try printing from other modern apps like Maps or Photos to the same printer and see if the issue is reproducing?

  • Lakshmi N. If you read our comments they clearly state We CAN print from all other apps, programs, photos EXCEPT from Microsoft Edge!!!

  • Absolutely, Jill B. In fact I’m sure most of us do what I do which is bring up Firefox or some other browser so that we can print. This is an Edge-specific problem.

  • Derek S. I do that as well but I don’t believe working around the problem is the solution. Microsoft Edge clearly has had this problem for some time now and they need to fix this specific problem or stop installing it in new computers. And what makes it even more frustrating is they setup a Microsoft edge issue platform like this and do absolutely nothing with it to address the problem to fix it.

  • Agree, Jill B. Firefox is not a solution, but I bring it up only to prove that this is an Edge problem, not a general printing problem as some of the Edge Team members seem to be suggesting.

  • For what it’s worth, I did find out one other thing that may be pertinent. The problem now appears to me to be related to the specific printer you are using. Most people have just one printer so if Edge cannot print it just never works. I happen to be on an office network with many printers of different types. I have now found that Edge prints fine to some printers but not to others. So, it could be that buying a new printer would be another (non)solution that may or may not work depending on how Edge feels about the new printer.

  • Specifically (in my case) Edge is not printing to my Dell 3100cn Color Laser Printer which is locally connected via USB, but it does print to the HP LaserJet 400 Color that is down the hall and on the network. I do not believe it has anything to do with USB versus network. I suspect that it has to do with the driver that is being used. I did update to the latest 3100cn driver to no avail.

  • The reason it has to be the driver is that the error occurs when Edge first tries to render the page on screen. It doesn’t matter if the printer is even there or turned on. Edge makes up its mind that it cannot print before it even tries.

  • Can some please check the Event Viewer (Event Viewer app in Windows) log path “Event Viewer (Local) > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > CodeIntegrity > Operational” and see if they are seeing ‘Error’ saying “Code Integrity determined that a process (\Device\HarddiskVolume1\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\MicrosoftEdgeCP.exe) attempted to load \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3\PrintConfig.dll that did not meet the Store signing level requirements.”

  • I did not find that error but did find: Code Integrity was unable to load the Microsoft-Windows-PPI-Windows-Drivers-printscan-Package31bf3856ad364e35amd64~~10.0.14393.0.cat catalog. Status 0xC0000034. Hope this helps track this down

  • Lakshmi N. I do have a couple of errors and warnings but nothing that reads what you have described above on Feb 10, 2017.

  • My printing from Edge worked fine on our office network, multiple printers and Print to PDF, until a couple of days ago when every selection started getting the same message.

  • One more request to the Insiders, can someone please open a ‘Feedback Hub’ bug with repro mode on, so that we can see the logs. Please use ‘Begin monitoring’ and try the scenario/repro, once you’re done please use ‘Stop monitoring’ option. This way we get the desired machine logs for this issue.

  • And did anyone install a Windows Update or a new Printer driver around the time when you started seeing this issue? If so, can you please provide the details like the Windows Update details (date, version etc) or driver details.

  • Lakshmi N. This is a brand new Dell Computer connected to 2 Lexmark Printers. And again… Everything prints fine with the exception of printing from MICROSOFT EDGE.

  • Lakshmi, is there any update on this issue and what those of our experience this can do besides give up on using Microsoft products in order to have working print options?

  • Daniel, we are still waiting for the logs as this issue is not actionable without the repro logs. Could you please log a ‘feedback hub’ bug with repro mode?

  • This whole process has been a waste of my time and frustration. I’m no longer interested in wasting anymore of it on trying to use something that has been so difficult and useless as Microsoft Edge since Microsoft has been unable to resolve this issue since 2015!
