2018 Location Based Entertainment Summit
Location Based Entertainment (LBE) Experiences have brought millions of consumers inside VR and AR for the first time at an affordable price and has been the most widely discussed segment in VR over the last year. Moreover, the space is driving innovation in the areas of immersive storytelling, social interaction, tracking, hardware durability and more.
The LBE Summit will be an opportunity for attendees to meet with operators, content developers, and solution providers to cultivate the community, share ideas, and hear from industry leaders across the ecosystem on topics including, “What is the right business model for my experience?” and “How can a game developer take advantage of the growth in LBE?”
Lastly, we at Microsoft want to learn from you, introduce you to our team and partners, and show you a sneak preview of features coming this fall!

Anthony Jacobson, Chief Operating Officer, SPACES Inc.
Anthony Jacobson is the Chief Operating Officer of SPACES, bringing deep experience as a game industry veteran to this leading immersive entertainment company. Anthony advises a variety of companies on business development, sales, strategy and growth.
Most recently, Anthony strategically advised Playfab to convert to a paid service, which resulted in an acquisition by Microsoft. Previously, Anthony was head of business development and publisher relations at Skillz and an SVP at video game publisher Atari, where he was integral in a wide variety of projects including establishing pipelines of mobile, social, console, and PC titles.
Anthony’s career highlights include serving as an SVP at G-Cluster, the first cloud gaming service, which is now owned by Softbank. Anthony was also founder and CEO of Shanghai game developer, Spicy Horse Games, as well as TMIEC, one of the video game industry's first production companies focused on creating original intellectual property for multi-platform development.
Anthony's passion for entrepreneurship began early in his career, highlighted by the sale of Goodstory.com to Creative Planet.
Brad Scoggin, Co-founder & CEO, SpringboardVR
Brad Scoggin is a founder and the Chief Executive Officer of SpringboardVR, a 16-month-old software start-up that has created a SaaS platform for LBVRE management and content distribution. SpringboardVR has grown to be one of the largest management platforms and distributors of VR content in the LBVRE space with over 300 locations across 20 countries and a 17% average monthly growth rate in minutes tracked. Prior to entering the VR industry, Mr. Scoggin served as the Executive Director for Mission Generation, Inc., an international nonprofit distributing educational curriculum. Under his leadership, the organization reached and maintained a consistent 30% annual growth rate in funding over a 6-year period. Mr. Scoggin earned a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Oklahoma. He and his wife, Dr. Merlyn Scoggin, a practicing psychiatrist, currently live in California with their daughters, Abrielle and Sarah, and son, Isaac.
Brandon Bray, Principal Group Program Manager, Microsoft
Brandon Bray leads the developer ecosystem team for Microsoft HoloLens and Microsoft Mixed Reality. HoloLens is a device that allows you to see holograms in the real world, as if they were really there. It’s an experience that enables both virtual reality and augmented reality to come together to create new experiences that bring the digital world and the real world together. My team supports developers and designers to guide them through building mixed reality experiences (including AR and VR) to entertain consumers and solve commercial business needs.
Chanel Summers, Vice President Creative Development, VRstudios
Chanel Summers joined VRstudios in 2017 as its first Vice President of Creative Development. She is responsible for delivering the kind of breakthrough content experiences the industry has come to expect from the leading provider of VR-enabled attractions for location-based entertainment operators. A pioneer in the field of interactive audio, Chanel has been a respected game producer and designer, Microsoft’s first audio technical evangelist, and a member of the original Xbox team. One of her major accomplishments was helping to design and support the audio system for that groundbreaking console and creating the first ever support team for content creators. Prior to joining VRstudios, Chanel was an accomplished touring drummer and founder of the highly regarded audio production and design company Syndicate 17. The company specialized in sound design, music production, and audio implementation for location-based attractions and virtual, augmented, and mixed reality products.
Chanel has consulted for several organizations and innovative technology companies and taught around the world on subjects as diverse as: the aesthetics of video game audio, world-building, and secondary-level STEM education for young women. Chanel is also a lecturer and director of the Experimental Audio Design Lab at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. In 2016, Chanel contributed “Making the Most of Audio in Characterization, Narrative Structure, and Level Design” to the CRC Press book Level Design: Processes and Experiences. In 2018, Chanel contributed “Creating Immersive and Aesthetic Auditory Spaces for Location-Based VR Experiences” to another CRC Press book, New Realities in Audio: A practical Guide for VR, AR, MR, and 360 Video.
Dan Escudero, Senior Technical Designer, Microsoft
Dan is an interactive designer, prototyper and coder. Over 17 years of interactive design experience, joined Microsoft in 2016 and since then, fully dedicated to designing and prototyping HoloLens apps for customers including JAL, Airbus and Mitsubishi, while leading the development of tools like the new SpectatorView (Preview).
James Fong, CEO, Jaunt China
James Fong is the CEO of Jaunt China, a joint venture invested by Jaunt Inc., Shanghai Media Group, and China Media Capital. Under his leadership, Jaunt China has become the leading VR LBE distribution and production company in China across more than 30 cities in China, a 300+ title library (40 exclusives), and an originally produced slate of critically acclaimed content and experiences.
Prior to joining Jaunt China, James served as the CEO of Oriental DreamWorks and the Managing Director of Strategy and Business Development for NBA China, where he led the China release of Kung Fu Panda 3 and launched NBA-quality arenas for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, 2010 World’s Fair in Shanghai, and the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, respectively. Earlier in his profession, he was a Director at Amazon, where he launched Amazon Marketplace, Amazon Advertising, and Amazon’s Global Selling in China, brining hundreds of thousands of Chinese sellers and manufacturers to Amazon’s global marketplace, and a General Manager at Microsoft, where he oversaw a $165 million venture fund and expanding Microsoft sales and marketing to over 32 cities in China. James started his civilian career as a product manager for Microsoft Project and served his nation as a captain in the U.S. Air Force.
James holds a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Purdue University and a Master of in Business Administration in Information Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Jeff Ludwyck, CEO, Hyperspace
Jeff has held a passion for unique & immersive experiences since Horizons, Epcot - circa first grade. Jeff was educated in thematic interior design & architecture with a focus on retail and entertainment design and branding. His love for entrepreneurship and creative experiences has led him through many successful launches and a 15-year education in business launch, growth, and development. Jeff and his team are building portals to new immersive realities through large scale physical VR experiences with their title launch, Wonderfall, at Pacific Science Center in Seattle, WA.
Joanna Popper, Global Head of VR Location Based Entertainment, HP
Joanna Popper is a Hollywood and Silicon Valley media executive. She recently became HP’s Global Head of Virtual Reality for Location Based Entertainment. Prior to HP, she was EVP of Media & Marketing at Singularity University and VP Marketing at NBCUniversal. Joanna developed a TV show partnership with NBC and Singularity University for “The Awesome Show,” a new TV series on technology and innovation. Joanna was selected as “50 Women Can Change the World in Media and Entertainment,” “Top Women in Digital: Game Changers,” “101 Women Leading the VR Industry” and is on the Coalition for the Women in XR Fund. Her previous experience includes McKinsey, JP Morgan Chase and DHL. She has degrees from Northwestern University and The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Kyle Prestenback, VP Design & Development – Global Experience Innovation, Carnival Corporation
Leading creative innovation projects for Carnival Corporation, the world’s largest travel experience enterprise, Kyle has a passion for rich, personal and inventive applications that connect people to meaningful experiences. An experienced inventor, designer, and technologist, Kyle leads a multidisciplinary team in the creation of an immersive vacation experience platform and experiential products that enhance the narrative potential of a cruise vacation.
Prior to joining Carnival Corporation, Prestenback worked at The Walt Disney Company for eleven years where he contributed to and led the development of many interactive and immersive innovation projects for the Interactive, Studio, Home Entertainment, and Theme Park divisions.
Kyle graduated from Carnegie Melon University with a Masters in Entertainment Technology.
Michael Festa, Director, Sales & Distribution, Survios, Inc.
Michael Festa is the Director of Sales & Distribution for Survios, a leading VR development studio based in Los Angeles. At Survios, Michael is responsible for building commercialization and monetization infrastructure for VR in location-based venues around the world. Survios has developed relationships with over 400 individual 'VR arcades', and commercially licenses its flagship title, Raw Data, as well as Sprint Vector and 3rd party titles, in over 36 territories.
Prior to Survios, Michael was a Software, Biomedical, and Forensics Engineer, and led business development for a worldwide recruiting firm in the engineering staffing industry. Michael is a graduate of the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering and an active member of the IEEE.
Michael Yang, Managing Director, Comcast Ventures
Michael Yang is a Managing Director for Comcast Ventures, the venture capital affiliate of Comcast Corporation. Based in Palo Alto, Michael leads the fund’s investment efforts in VR/AR, Internet of Things, and health tech. His VR/AR investments include Baobab Studios, Felix & Paul Studios and Spaces, as well as NextVR and Meta. Prior to joining Comcast Ventures, Michael was a VP/GM at Yahoo! and also a Principal with Atlas Ventures. He has an MBA from Harvard and a BS from the University of Pennsylvania.
Nick Klingensmith, Software Engineer, Microsoft
Nick Klingensmith is an experienced game developer and educator specializing in tool development, graphics programming, MR, and Unity! With over 100 published games, he's worked on small arcade games, mobile high-fidelity GPU pushing titles, all the way to massive networked social games. The tools he's published on the Unity Asset Store are also used in thousands of games, on just about every modern platform imaginable! Nick has not only collected all the Unity certifications currently available, he's also helped write content for Unity certifications as well. Nick currently works for Microsoft as an engineer on the Mixed Reality Academy team in San Francisco.
Nancy Li, Global Partnerships - AI Perception & Mixed Reality, Microsoft
Nancy Li leads global partnerships for Mixed Reality & AI Perception group in Microsoft. She is relentless in driving global partner adoption and platform market success in Mixed Reality and the new categories of consumer experiences and commercial solutions built on MR, Cloud and AI. She’s an avid believer in LBE and drives the Mixed Reality LBE program motion. She's a committed chameleon who does whatever it takes to help our partners and business succeed.
Priya Saiprasad, Principal, M12 (formerly known as Microsoft Ventures)
Priya is a Principal for M12 in the Bay Area and has worked with entrepreneurs both as an investor and an acquirer. Previously, she was part of Square’s Corporate Development team as a Deal Lead, where she led several acquisitions in the mobile payments, SMB SaaS and AI & machine learning spaces. Prior to that, Priya was an investor at Saints Capital focusing on direct secondary investments in enterprise SaaS and marketplace startups. She started her career as an Investment Banking Analyst for UBS, as part of their Leveraged Finance and Restructuring group. Priya holds a B.S. in Business Administration and graduated with highest honors from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.
Sam Wang, Co-Founder and President, Sky Limit Entertainment (SoReal)
Sam has over 15 years of experience in the film and entertainment industries. He was an integral member of the creation team for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Opening Ceremony and is a repeat nominee for sound and visual effects awards in both the Asian and U.S. film industries (e.g. Asian Film Awards and US Golden Reel Awards).
Furthermore, Sam is a co-founder of Phenom Films, the largest privately-owned film technology and post production company in China. He was a winner of the Best Visual Effect Award at the 53rd annual Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival for a production that reached $270M in Chinese box office sales.
Sarah Marsh, Chief Experience Officer, The VOID
Sarah Marsh is an industry-recognized expert in customer experience, specializing in loyalty and integrated marketing programs for global brands and startups. Marsh develops end-to-end customer experiences, from production to talent, to create memorable moments that foster discovery, enthusiasm, and delight. Her work has reached retail stores, theme parks, movie studios, airplanes, hotels and automobiles around the world. Prior to The VOID, Marsh was Vice President of Customer Experience & Engagement, Global E-Commerce at Uniqlo, and Vice President of Customer Loyalty and Minister of Citizenship at KidZania. She has also held roles with Virgin America, Discovery Communications, and Amazon.com.
Scott L. Wessel, Senior Vice President, Digital and Technology Solutions, MGM CHINA Holdings
Scott L. Wessel is the Senior Vice President of Digital and Technology Solutions at MGM CHINA, overseeing all aspects of the Technology and Digital environment. He provides executive management and direction for all technological, infrastructure, application, digital, and entertainment technology solutions. In addition, Mr. Wessel also administers the information security program at MGM CHINA. Recently, he directed the completion of MGM COTAI, a 3.8 billion USD integrated resort with a technology budget of close to 200 million USD. Previously, Mr. Wessel spent over 20 years at MGM Resorts International, which included a 3-year assignment in Macau, China leading the technology implementation for MGM MACAU. During his time with MGM in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, he held various management positions in Information Technology such as Director, Application Support, Director, Program Management, & Executive Director, Information Technology Strategy. During this time, he was also responsible for the direct IT management and governance of several large integrated resort openings and implementations as well as the oversight of a US$125 million capital technology budget for a multi-faceted hotel/casino/retail/residential project in Las Vegas. Mr. Wessel holds a bachelor’s Degree in Hotel Administration from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and a Masters in Information Technology from American Intercontinental University.
Spencer Reynolds, Studio Manager - Reactor, Microsoft
Spencer joined the Mixed Reality Capture team in 2013 and manages the flagship Microsoft stages in San Francisco and Redmond. He and the entire team are passionate about bringing highest-quality volumetric video solutions to all creators and collaborating closely with the first two 3rd-party partner stages in London and LA. Prior to joining Microsoft, Spencer worked at Industrial Light + Magic for almost 8 years developing VFX capture technologies and workflows for feature film and games.
Dr. Steve Sullivan, General Manager – Mixed Reality Capture Studios, Microsoft
Steve is currently GM of the Mixed Reality Capture Studios at Microsoft, creating volumetric video of real people and performances for Mixed Reality and traditional 2D experiences.
Prior to joining Microsoft, Steve was Senior Technology Officer for ILM/Lucasfilm. He led R&D across the Lucas Divisions, advancing the state of the art in content creation tech for film, TV, and games. He contributed to over 70 films and received three Academy Awards for Technology. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and serves on the Academy's Science and Technology Council. He received a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with an emphasis on multi-view reconstructions.
Tim Ruse, CEO, Zero Latency
Tim Ruse is a co-founder and CEO of Zero Latency, a world-leading free-roam virtual reality technology business. He is obsessed with using emerging technology to create new business models. This passion drove him to take Zero Latency from a garage to the world stage and 40x revenue in under 2 years. He is fascinated by what makes people tick and how great companies grow. He believes that no matter what you do, people are the most important factor.
Tipatat Chennavasin, General Partner, The Venture Reality Fund
Tipatat Chennavasin is a General Partner of the Venture Reality Fund investing in early stage VR and AR companies. He has experience creating VR/AR content and became convinced of the power of VR when he accidentally cured himself of his real-life fear of heights while developing in VR. He has established himself as VR/AR industry spokesperson and thought leader and has contributed to many publications and presented at various industry events worldwide. He is an adviser for many VR companies as well as a mentor for VR incubators and accelerators around the world. The VR Fund has looked at over 4,000 startups in the space and invested in 25.
Yoyo Zhang, Program Manager, Microsoft
Yoyo Zhang is a Program Manager for Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) at Microsoft. Yoyo’s current focus is to drive the adoption and success of WMR in the LBE space. She works directly with LBE partners to understand their needs and, in parallel, manages Microsoft’s engineering team to create and deliver solutions. Yoyo joined Microsoft after graduating with B.S. in Computer Science from Harvey Mudd College in 2012. At Microsoft, she was integral in shipping the HoloLens Enterprise SKU that enabled HoloLens to be used by partners like JPL and Lowe’s. In addition to the widespread adoption of Mixed Reality, Yoyo is passionate about gaming, and how emerging technologies, like MR, can re-shape the gaming industry.
