Instructions for:
Raspberry Pi 2 or 3

1 Get the tools

2 Set up your device

3 Set up Visual Studio

4 Write your first app

Step 1 of 4: Get the tools

Download the tools and software you need to set up your board, build and explore Windows IoT.

1Get Windows 10Hide

Make sure you are running the public release of Windows 10 (build 14393 or better).
You can find your current build number by clicking the start button, typing "winver", and hitting the Enter key.

To upgrade, visit the Download Windows 10 page.

While Windows 10 is not required to install Windows 10 IoT Core using NOOBS, you'll need Windows 10 in order to use the IoT Core Dashboard app. Windows 10 is also needed to use Visual Studio to develop applications on Windows 10 IoT Core.

2Get NOOBSHide

To install Windows 10 IoT Core onto your Raspberry Pi using NOOBS you need to have a micro SD Card formatted with NOOBS. You may have received a pre-imaged SD Card with NOOBS already installed. If so, continue to the next step. If you don't already have a NOOBS SD card, we recommend you follow the instructions to install Windows onto a blank SD Card.

  1. If you'd like to continue using NOOBS, download the latest version of NOOBS from the official NOOBS download site .
  2. Once NOOBS has been downloaded, you must copy it onto your SD Card. To do so, you'll need to mount your SD card onto your machine and format it. The SD Formatter 4.0 tool from the SD Association is the suggested tool to use when formatting your SD card for NOOBS.
  3. Finally, extract the NOOBS archive onto your newly formatted SD card. You can now proceed to step 2.

Step 1 of 4: Get the tools is complete. Set up your device is next.
