Kinect hardware requirements and sensor setup

For applications that will make intensive use of Kinect for Windows v2 body tracking in addition to custom application processing, we recommend using the computer configuration below as a reference. We find that it can provide great performance in the most challenging of tracking scenarios, while still allowing for additional application processing and maintaining optimal frame rate.

Hardware requirements

Use the Kinect Configuration Verifier tool to ensure that your PC or tablet meets compatibility requirements and to check your system for any known issues, as well as verify that you are running the latest driver for your GPU.

Note: The Kinect Configuration Verifier tool runs automatically when you launch it. Expand the arrows to see more details on which items passed, failed, or may cause compatibility issues.

Your PC or tablet must meet the following minimum specifications:

  • 64-bit (x64) processor

Kinect for Xbox One sensor setup

If you are using the Kinect for Xbox One sensor, be sure that your system meets the hardware requirements listed above and run the Kinect Configuration Verifier tool to check your system for any known issues. You will also need the Kinect Adapter for Windows to connect your Xbox One sensor with your PC or tablet.

To install the sensor:

  • If you are developing applications, download and install the free SDK 2.0.

  • Use the Kinect Adapter for Windows to connect your Xbox One sensor with your PC or tablet to develop interactive applications with the SDK 2.0 (and to run some Kinect-enabled applications). After you have connected your sensor and computer, Windows will automatically install the Kinect driver.

Note: the adapter is not for use with Xbox consoles.
