Apply Zero Trust principles to an Azure Virtual WAN

With the advancement of modern cloud technology, mobile devices, and various endpoints, relying solely on corporate firewalls and perimeter networks is no longer adequate. An end-to-end Zero Trust strategy operates under the assumption that security breaches are inevitable. This approach requires verification of each request as if it originates from an untrusted network environment. Networking remains crucial in the Zero Trust model for connecting and securing infrastructure, applications, and data. There are three main objectives for securing your networks under Zero Trust:

  • Prepare to handle attacks before they occur.
  • Limit the extent of damage and its rapid spread.
  • Increase the challenge of compromising your cloud infrastructure.

Azure Virtual WAN supports a global transit network architecture by facilitating ubiquitous, any-to-any connectivity among globally distributed cloud workloads in virtual networks (VNets), branch sites, SaaS and PaaS applications, and users. Implementing a Zero Trust approach in Azure Virtual WAN is essential to ensure the security and protection of your backbone.
