Automating GitHub Repo Maintenance with AI Agents

Maintaining an active GitHub repository takes time: issues pile up, dependencies go stale, and routine tasks compete with feature development. In this talk, we’ll explore how AI agents can lighten our maintenance load, from triaging issues to upgrading dependencies.

I'll start off by demonstrating low-code approaches using VS Code with GitHub Copilot. Then I'll dive into two open-source Python projects, the Issue Triager and Repo Rover, that use a combination of Azure OpenAI, GitHub APIs, and GitHub Copilot Coding Agent to automate common workflows. All of the automation workflows still keep a human-in-the-loop, which is still so important due to the imperfect output of LLMs.
