Linux’s impact on how technology works in modern day is pivotal. Given its impact, everyone in this space should have a basic understanding of how it works and that’s the goal of this session. At a high-level, we’re going to learn about how Linux works. We won’t get too technical or into the weeds though. You don’t need to know how an engine works to drive a car, but you do need to know how to pump gas. Same goes for your Linux knowledge, you don’t need to know how to make your own kernel but understanding what one is can come in handy. We’ll look at what the Linux Kernel is, what User Space is, how File Systems work, and more. The Windows Subsystem for Linux lets developers run a GNU/Linux environment -- including most command-line tools, utilities, and applications -- directly on Windows, unmodified, without the overhead of a traditional virtual machine or dualboot setup. It’s a great way for people of all levels and roles to get experience with Linux without the need for a dedicated and separate machine. In this session we’re going to get you started with WSL. We’ll start by going over how to use Linux commands and work across Windows and Linux file systems. Then we’ll set up a dev environment using WSL and Visual Studio Code, and finally create a website using this environment.
