Linux is a free and open-source operating system that has been around since the early 1990s. It’s compatible with millions of devices and powers servers, data centers, supercomputers, mobile devices, personal computers, and much of what we know as Cloud Computing. Given its impact in the world of technology, a high-level knowledge of how it works, how to leverage it when it comes to Microsoft Azure Cloud, and how to use it for development is a must for all people in tech. This series starts of with a primer on how the operating systems works, we will then learn more about what it means to use Linux on Azure and the opportunities there. We’ll finish off by getting started with WSL so we can leverage Windows systems to get hands-on with Linux and development. Each session will be about an hour long and by the end, you’ll have a better understanding of how you too can use Linux in your own career and work.

How Linux Works: A Primer

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM (UTC)

Linux’s impact on how technology works in modern day is pivotal. Given its impact, everyone in this space should have a basic understanding of how it works and that’s the goal of this session. At a high-level, we’re going to learn about how Linux works. We won’t get too technical or into the weeds though. You don’t need to know how an engine works to drive a car, but you do need to know how to pump gas. Same goes for your Linux knowledge, you don’t need to know how to make your own kernel but understanding what one is can come in handy. We’ll look at what the Linux Kernel is, what User Space is, how File Systems work, and more. This will be a beginner friendly introduction to how Linux work and will serve any professional or enthusiast in tech. Resources: https://aka.ms/IntroAzureLinux1

Linux on Azure: What is it, How, and When to use it.

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM (UTC)

Linux is a free and open-source operating system that has been around since the early 1990s. It also happens to be the fastest growing platform on Azure. Linux-based images comprise 60% of Azure Marketplace Images. Top 100 Microsoft customers deploy Linux workloads on Azure. More than 50% of VM cores runs on Linux on Azure. There’s no better time to learn how to leverage Linux in Azure. In this session we’ll cover exactly that. What is, how to, and when to use Linux on Azure are topics we’ll be covering. If you’re looking to gain a better understanding of how to leverage Linux on Azure, this is the session for you. Get Started with the Windows Subsystem for Linux

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM (UTC)

The Windows Subsystem for Linux lets developers run a GNU/Linux environment -- including most command-line tools, utilities, and applications -- directly on Windows, unmodified, without the overhead of a traditional virtual machine or dualboot setup. It’s a great way for people of all levels and roles to get experience with Linux without the need for a dedicated and separate machine. In this session we’re going to get you started with WSL. We’ll start by going over how to use Linux commands and work across Windows and Linux file systems. Then we’ll set up a dev environment using WSL and Visual Studio Code, and finally create a website using this environment. If you’re looking to better understand what WSL is and how to use it for development, you don’t want to miss this session. Prerequisites: Due to time limitations, I can’t cover installing WSL and a distro, follow these to get ready for the session: Install WSL: https://aka.ms/Feb22InstallWSL1 Install a Linux distro, I recommend: https://aka.ms/Feb22InstallUbuntu1
